Description
Fabulous hard to find vintage blue milk glass camel covered dish. The bottom measures ~6" long x ~3" across in the middle x ~2" high; with the camel top in place, it's ~5 1/4" high from the tip of the camel's head to the bottom of the base. The piece appears to have been painted; some of the black remains. There are a number of small chips and rough spots on the bottom rim of the camel cover; there are also some lines that seem to be superficial cracks, one on the side and another small one on the inside lid near the neck (see photos). They do not go through to the other side.
The original camel candy dish mold was made by Westmoreland glass, which began producing high quality glass in the 1890's, after the company moved to a factory in Grapeville, PA. The company continued to make glass until about 1984.
While many of the pieces had Westmoreland marks imprinted in the glass, paper labels were also used throughout the years. Most of these wore away with cleaning and use.
After the company closed,
many of their molds were sold to other glass manusfacturers including Summit Art Glass. Since there is no mark or label on the piece,
I don't know whether it was made by Westmoreland or by Summit Glass. Based on its condition and the color, I am inclined to think it was made by Westmoreland sometime between 1920 and 1950, as the company was known for their high quality milk glass which they produced in abundance during this period.
