Pulled off a boathouse in the North County NY on the St Lawrence River where is hung proudly for a couple decades, and it was always stored inside during the harsh winter. It was purchased from a nautical antique dealer in the 1990s as being approximately 100 years old at the time. This is a large and rare find in pretty good overall condition... Shows it age but has genuine character without appearing very damaged, minor scuffs mostly just in the finish. No cracks or visible repairs. Would refinish beautifully if you choose to do so and would look great as-is just cleaned up a bit. Excellent specimen A+ nautical antique find in RARE extra large 5ft size - grab this genuine maritime captain's wheel before another collector snags it for their collection!!
It has seen a few layers of stain or weatherproofing but I leave it up to the buyer to clean it up or refinish it as they see fit. Should be an easy cleanup whether you seek to keep it as-is or restore it. There a small fortune cookie sized blob of putty attached to the back which is how it hung on the boatload to keep it from resting right up against the nail and the side of the boathouse. Probably easy to pop off if you plan to hang it indoors on a permanent fixture instead. Indoor or outdoor use. It silent is winters inside the boathouse and was under an overhang so it didn't see all that much water even in the summer.
Appears to be possibly mahogany, definitely a darker color hardwood, but I'm no carpenter. What you see is what you get - wood and brass antique ship's wheel / captain's helm, exact age unknown but definitely pre1930s based on screw types used throughout. Brass center looks to be in good shape though there's a thin layer of weather sealant or stain it's flaking off so you can see the brass is intact and untarnished.
Extra large 60" inch (5ft) from tip to tip at the ends of the spokes. 42.75" wheel frame. 10 spokes at 26.25" each. Brass hub width of 7 11/16" with a center hole 2.25" wide with a 3/16" stabilizer slot cut out. Hub depth of 2 1/16" and overall approximate weight of 40 pounds.
