Description
LARGE rare 1920s Tai Sing Loo color photo, Pearl Harbor US Navy S-24 (SS 129) submarineUnited States S-class submarine S-24 entering Pearl Harbor, 1920s. Rare color photo by the esteemed US Navy Pearl Harbor photographer Tai Sing Loo
Note: I’m not an expert on Tai Sing Loo’s photography, so please ask questions if you have them, as I don’t offer returns.
In my research, it appears that the large size of this photo (10” x 14”) is quite rare for his work. Printed on heavy paper. (Framed it measures 11.5” x 15.5”)
Also, his photos in color appear to be rare as well. The year this photo was printed is unknown, and I do not know what photographic process was used. (It is not a lithograph, and there are no dots under magnification. )
Upon very close examination I would say that he signed it by hand, in black pen. Most of his “signed” photos were signed on the negative, and appear white in the final print.
This photo is a nice combination of Tai Sing Loo’s work as official US Navy photographer at Pearl Harbor (1919-1940s) and his interest in landscape photography, with the large tree “framing” the submarine as it makes its way into port.
I removed the photo from the frame to photograph it, and then cleaned the glass before reassembly, using the old nails holes on back. The frame appears to be the original, and is in decent condition with minor wear.
