Antique Alton, Illinois Leather Billed Firemen's Helmet
This historic Alton, Illinois fire helmet is one of a kind.  It is probably the only one from the city of Alton, Illinois left.   It was found in a firehouse which my husband and I purchased.  It was handed to the fire chief at the time in the city of Alton.  They decided they wanted to keep it and I only got it back after having to file suit against the city of Alton.  The exhibit tag is shown in picture 3.  This hat is absolutely wonderful.  There is a brass eagle on the top with it's bill over the front shield showing the city of Alton.  The leather is in pretty good shape for as old as it is.  There is one crack in the leather in the front of the hat. After having this hat listed, several interested people have informed me that this is a Caims 92 4 comb leather helmet with a cross comb pattern.  Another told me it is a parade weight helmet circa 1880s.  I want to thank them for their help.
