Hilo lava formation . 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Set of two handcolored albumen photos by Davey, circa 1890s.Frank Davey (active in Hawaii from 1897-1901) was a London-born photographer and artist who was, during his short time in Hawaii, one of the most prolific photographers on the Islands, capturing everything from produce, lei sellers and public buildings to island panoramas to Hawaii's royalty.
Albumen hand-printing, invented in 1850, was the most popular form of photographic printing from the 1860s to 1890s. It used the albumen found in egg whites to bind the photographic chemicals to the paper, and silver nitrate to produce images by exposure to light.
