The jacket displays a striking photo on the cover. It is age toned with a bit of wear including some small chips at the ends of the spine and along the upper edge. Both flaps are attached, unclipped with price intact. There are no significant portions missing and it has been placed in an Archival Quality clear Mylar Jacket cover to better preserve it in the future. Jackets on this book are quite a Rare find.
The boards are covered in green cloth with titles and filigree blind stamped in gilt. The surfaces are clean and bright with minimal wear primarily at the ends of the spine, only slight edge wear, a bump to the upper rear free corner.
The interior reveals mapped end papers back and front that present the flight paths of the author. The contents are clean and firmly bound. Age toning is noted, but no foxing. There is a brief previous owner name and date written in brief form in the upper margin of the front past down. There are other ownership indications, no any marks, creases or tears.
"My assignment as Commanding Officer of the 11th Photo Section, Air Service, permitted me, in the furtherance of my work, a greater freedom in aerial exploration that came to my brother officers of the Air Service; and, in fact, the requirements made of me in completely photographing the island of Oahu and all important and interesting sections on the other islands of the group insured my obtaining a knowledge of the topography of the entire group with a knowledge of location and aspect of all points of interest, ancient and modern, which is, I feel safe in saying unequalled. In addition to the continual photographic flights made over the Territory, I have consistently tried to go everywhere and see everything by ground in the two years of my residence here."
- R.C. Wriston, Hawaii, August, 1925.
In 1923, Lieut. R.C. Wriston was ordered to Hawaii. Although initially less than pleased he soon realized and opportunity to photograph the Territory of Hawaii from the air, an accomplishment that had not before been achieved.
Included in HAWAII TO-DAY are text and an impressive number of photos (63) that address many familiar sites in Hawaii along with a bit of the history and culture. The most outstanding feature of the book, however, is Lieut. Wriston’s aerial photographs of the islands, particularly those of somewhat obscure areas.
"The scheme of this book at least will be novel. I shall take the reader with me on an aerial journey, one which he will be able to take for himself in a very short time. Leaving the island of Oahu, we shall travel first to Molokai, then among the islands, visiting Lanai, Kahoolawe, and eastern Maui in turn, on our way to the Island of Hawaii. On course on Hawaii will bring us first to the Parker Ranch, thence over the mountains Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa to Kiluaea Volcano, from which point we shall take a clockwise direction around the island, again crossing the plain of the Parker Ranch to the windward cost, which we shall follow northwest toward Maui. We shall visit the windward side of each of the islands in turn until we reach Kauai, which we shall circle clockwise, making wide trips from nearest points to Niihau and to Kaula Rock. "
(Additional PREFACE excerpt) R.C. Wriston, Hawaii, August, 1925.
HAWAII TO-DAY represents not simply more pictures, but a First Edition of the first aerial presentation of consequence. Also included are many statistics and facts making this possibly more outstanding today than it was upon its publication in 1926. This fine copy in its rare original dust jacket would be a price addition to a Pacific Isle Collection.
