    Description

This albumen photograph from my collection has been found nowhere else in my experience or research. It is a Rare and Unique Albumen Photo by famed early Honolulu photographer James J. Williams. Pictured is his friend Mr. Eugene Zoetl who shortly after this photo was taken on Hawaii's Big Island died in a gasoline explosion at his place of employment on Fort St. adjacent to Williams' photo studio.
An interesting feature of the volcano at this time period appears to be a sauna cabin built over a vent. Uniquely there appears to be an outrigger canoe next to the cabin. There are historical references to a lake within the crater during this period similar to the lake that has recently formed in present-day Kilauea.
Notations in German about the explosion have been made below the photo which has been mounted on blue card stock.
Williams' Honolulu Fort Street studio (pictured) was located on the Beaver Block just steps away from the Beaver Saloon/Hotel where Zoetl was employed and the explosion took place.
The Fort Street/Queen Street area was known as the Beaver Block after the Hudson's Bay Company outpost established there in 1846 whose mascot was a beaver.

The photo has age spotting as seen. One of the photos seen here shows a black spot in the shrubbery which appears to be a feature of, or damage to, the original negative. Please closely inspect the photos before bidding. Feel free to message me with any questions.
