Description

This style of chair is known as "official's hat chair" because the projections over the rear stiles resemble the knobs on the black hats once worn by high-ranking administrators in Ming Dynasty. These high back chairs are handcrafted and structured with wooden pegs and tenon structure,  which is the very traditional craftsmanship for furniture making in ancient China. Intricate relief carvings of Chinese calligraphy "Happiness and Fortune" decorate the back splat of the chairs. The carvings are very delicate and three dimensional. Both the arms and the back splats of the chairs are crafted with deep curves. The front openings underneath the seats are uniquely carved into "arch" shape with unique carvings. Made from elm wood with beautiful wood grain, the chairs are very solid and have been kept in excellent condition. Original patina and wear.
